Calesco was the first planet to be found with life, but the second to be colonized after Aridulus. Even though it was the closest to Earth in the Alpha Centauri system, long range telescopic observation revealed only low amounts of oxygen. When survey teams first arrived there, they discovered mostly algae growth on it's surface which could be seen from orbit as dark green patches. There were a few species of small sagebrush on this world, but no animal life could be supported with it's extraordinarily dry climate. Most water on it's surface would melt during the day and refreeze back into the soil at night, this produced a sparse ecosystem that did create a diffuse oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere that gave colonists an atmosphere that was similar to being on top of the Earth's highest mountain, Mt. Everest. Calesco later became one of the earliest candidates for Terraforming. Read about the first expedition to Calesco - To Be Inspired
