Calidus, first surveyed in the 2080's, maintains a small population of colonists, mostly scientists. It has an extremely rich biosphere with numerous sub-continents and smaller islands dispersed throughout it's seas. The seas on it's surface are shallow, only averaging 200 meters compared to the Earth's average ocean depth of 3,720 meters. The sub-continents that cover it's surface do not rise too far above the water surface thereby creating a swamp-type of climate that dominates. It's land area is considerably greater than Earth however much of it lies saturated with water which creates enormous swamps. This climate has given rise to one of the most complex biospheres in known space as well as a substantial amount of methane in it's atmosphere. This creates a generally breathable atmosphere, however it has a pervasive and nauseating stench. The world is a valuable scientific resource, however it's rather unpleasant to live there, not only because of it's atmosphere, but also because of a number of large predatory species that can make any foray into it's swamps quite dangerous. The world is home to a few million colonists, however they live in the drier areas of the planet and it is mostly a population that supports the ongoing scientific work done to learn of this complex world.
